Supermodel Kate Moss is auctioning off a three-part non-fungible token (NFT) collection with a portion of proceeds going towards female wellbeing group Gurls Talk.
The first, entitled Sleep with Kate, sold through cryptocurrency Ethereum (ETN) for $11,264.02 USD to an anonymous buyer “malice” on April 14. The bidding for Walk with Kate and Drive with Kate has not yet opened. It is unknown what percentage of the money will be donated to the charity.
Started in 2016 by model Adwoa Aboah, Gurls Talk is “a community-led non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the mental health and wellbeing of adolescent girls and young women,” it states on the web site, adding that Aboah has “personal experience with mental health.” The charity creates “safe spaces – both on and offline – where gurls can access mental health resources, share their experiences and support each other so they never feel alone or have to reach a breaking point.”
Gurls Talk hosts live events, offers an online community where women and girls can share stories, and also has a podcast hosted by Adwoa Aboah. Additionally, Gurls Talk offers meditation exercises, coping tips, and a list of hotlines for emergencies.
Moss began her charity campaign for Gurls Talk on April 9, posting videos for Drive with Kate, Walk with Kate and Sleep with Kate on her Instagram account. Bidders for the NFTs are hoping to own the original file, which can be bought and exchanged using cryptocurrency.
NFTs have moved into the mainstream in the art distribution world. Physical original works have now been supplemented with digital originals that can be distributed online. Even though copies exist of the work, the buyer is pursuing the original file. In March 2021, a 5000-piece NFT art collage by the digital artist Beeple sold for over $69 million USD.
'Art for me has always been about the moment,” reads a quote from Moss on the NFT auction site. “Time is the thing that there is never enough of and that waits for no-one, I’m intrigued by who will want to own a moment of mine. I was also drawn to the idea that this ownership can be used to help others in need hopefully gain more of it. I look forward to seeing this experiment through.”
The three pieces were created by an anonymous group of artists and creative under the banner MITNFT, “dedicated to exploring the idea of the iconic within the realm of what is personal and what is public.”
Moments in Time Collective also said that the three NFTs are climate neutral (verified by Offsetra) in response to concerns over carbon emission from NFT transfers.
The winning bidder will also receive an audio certification from Kate Moss acknowledging the buyer.
