Two-time Olympic gymnast Ellie Black is backing what Hudson’s Bay is declaring National Red Mitten Day, today, Nov. 21, by encouraging Canadians to buy and wear a pair of the company’s mitten to show their support for this country’s athletes. The mittens, however, are on sale for the winter season.
The new design is oatmeal and black fair isle and come in sizes for babies, kids, youth and adults. From each pair, which sells for $15, $3.90 goes to the Canadian Olympic Foundation, the official charitable organization of the Canadian Olympic Committee and Team Canada. Since 2005, over $32 million has been raised through the red mitten initiative.
On the Foundation’s web site, it says the organization “empowers Canadians to be an integral part of the Canadian Olympic movement by directly supporting our current and next generation athletes and coaches with the critical funds they need to pursue the podium. We support our athletes at all levels to ensure they receive top of the line resources including the coaching, training, specialized sport medicine and access to competitions that they require to reach their dreams and goals of wearing the maple leaf on their chest, representing Canada at the Olympic Games.”
Black, who was born in Nova Scotia, is an advocate for healthy living and travels around the province to inspire kids to get involved in sport. She competed in the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Games with a goal of representing Canada in 2020 Games. She won a total of 10 medals in the 2015 and 2019 Pan Am Games, and was the flag-bearer for Team Canada at the closing ceremony of Lina 2019 Pan American Games.
