Two Canadians To Trek Across Siberia … Why?

Siberia

By Kevin Young

Impossible2Possible’s Siberian Express For Water will take Ray Zahab of Quebec and Kevin Vallely of British Columbia across the frozen surface of Siberia’s Lake Baikal, starting March 1. The Canadian adventurers hope to raise awareness about the worldwide scarcity of clean water, and inspire young people to push themselves beyond their perceived limitations.

The two plan to run 60 to 70 kilometers per day, without the assistance of skis or any support crew, as they attempt to make a record-setting crossing, pulling all the gear and food necessary for survival behind them on 100 pound sleds. Sponsors for the journey include Gatorade, Iridium, Apple, Nathan, Kahtoola, Canada Goose and Stratos Global.

Zahab’s mission is personal, an effort by the former pack-a-day smoker turned ultra-marathoner and adventurer, to convince young people that anything is achievable and to inspire them to act on that belief to make a positive change in their own lives and the world around them.

“Hey Ayatollah, Leave Those Kids Alone” Sings Rock Band

Blurred Vision

By Karen Bliss

Iranian Canadian rock band Blurred Vision has made a video for its poignant version of Pink Floyd’s 1979 classic “Another Brick In The Wall,” which they have subtitled “Hey Ayatollah, Leave Those Kids Alone!”  Since it was posted on YouTube February 1, it has been viewed close to 86,000 times.

With permission from Pink Floyd founder Roger Waters, they were able to change the lyrics to include, “hey Ayatollah, leave those kids alone.”

Blurred Vision — which was founded in 1998 by brothers Sepehr (singer, guitar) and Soheil (bass) and now includes Joel Lightman (keyboards) and Giampaollo Scatuzza (drums) — is donating 50 percent of the proceeds from the digital sale of the single to Amnesty International. The siblings received an honorary award back in 2005 for their work with the leading human rights organization.

Did This “Affected” Young Man Get A Yes From Dragon’s Den?

Affected 1

By Cori Ferguson

Brady Thrasher wants to know what’s affected you, and then for you to buy the T-shirt. The 23-year old Windsor, Ontario entrepreneur is the founder of the Affected Campaign, a line of clothing sporting the word “Affected,” which allows purchasers to direct a portion of the purchase price to the registered charity of their choice. Launched in September 2007, Affected has been able to donate nearly $8000 to 107 charities in Canada and abroad since its inception.

“I’ve hit all markets because it’s such a unique product and it triggers curiosity right away,” Thrasher tells Samaritanmag. “It’s not like it’s flashy clothing; it’s neutral so anyone from a toddler to a senior citizen can represent the product.”

From the sale of each $20 shirt (tax included), $6 is taken off the top for the registered charity designated by the purchaser. Because he prints the shirts on-demand without a large volume contract, each shirt costs him approximately $7.50 to make and the remaining funds are used for marketing and advertising, whether at charitable events or on kids soccer team uniforms.

Thrasher has been amazed by the number of different causes represented by Affected product sales: everything from national charities working to eradicate MS, cancer, drunk driving and heart disease to local shelters, diseases he wasn’t previously aware of, and individuals undertaking humanitarian missions overseas.

Originally launched with three styles, the Affected line now includes men’s and women’s T-shirts, tanks and hoodies, children’s onesies, and sunglasses. There is an Affected style for everyone because, as Thrasher points out, “everyone has been affected by something.”

NYC’s Greener Gadgets Conference

Greener Gadgets

By Kevin Young

New York City’s third annual Greener Gadgets Conference, taking place February 25 at the McGraw-Hill Conference Centre, explores viable sustainable alternatives for the electronics we use at home, work and in between.

As a forum for discussing green technology solutions, Greener Gadgets aims to attract gadget users and electronics companies, giving them an opportunity to discuss the role gadgets play in our lives and how we might diminish their environmental impact with more sustainable designs. From eco-friendly products to energy efficient gear, the conference showcases concepts and products that both encourage and inspire us all to be greener citizens.

Register on-site with a credit card, beginning at 9 a.m. Regular attendee price is $395 and students (with proper ID) are $75. Press and bloggers (bring proper credentials) are free. For further details on the conference, including presenters/speakers,  go to www.greenergadgets.com.

The 2010 installment kicks off with a panel that starts right where we live. Entitled Green Living Begins At Home, the session will detail how a green home, whether it’s located in a rural area, a major urban center, or well off the grid, can also be a smart home. Other topics of discussion will range from the role that sustainable design can play in improving people’s lives, to personal responsibility for energy consumption, to means for companies to track their own carbon footprint.

Pitch In So Haiti Can Pitch 1000 Tents

1000 Tents

The Salvation Army has launched a Canadian campaign to raise money to buy 1000 tents for the survivors of last month’s earthquake in Haiti. Just drop into one of  thrift stores and make a donation or contribute online at www.tents4haiti.ca.
All of the money collected will go directly towards purchasing tents that serve as temporary shelter.  Each participating Salvation Army Thrift Store has set a minimum of $500, enough to buy at least one tent.

“Right now, the focus of our work is shifting and the Tents for Haiti program is a unique way that Canadians can stay involved,” commissioner William Francis, territorial commander for The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda, said in a press statement. “We continue to serve immediate needs, but we’re also beginning to address longer-term issues, like housing, especially in the lead-up to Haiti’s rainy season this spring.”

According to figures provided by the Salvation Army, there are more than 1.2 million people homeless and more than 200,000 homes that are severely damaged or destroyed. The Salvation Army has signed an agreement with the United Nations to provide care to 20,000 Haitians and part of that agreement is to purchase tents. They will be used at relief camps in Port-au-Prince, Jacmel and surrounding areas.

Disney’s Selena Gomez: “Your Voice Is The Most Powerful Tool”

Selena Gomez

“A big deal in my family is that we’ve always learned about giving back. My mom always wanted me to know that even though we weren’t as fortunate as we are now that giving back was always very important. As much as you could do really meant a lot. So now that I have this platform that I’m able to have my voice be heard, I still have that same mentality, but I’m able to share that and educate my fans and encourage my fans to help as well. It’s all about the simple things. Your voice is the most powerful tool you have so being able to spread the word about organizations and wanting to get involved. It’s all about going online and trying to find places around your community, just about the lesson, I think.” — Selena Gomez tells Samaritanmag.com

Seventeen-year-old Gomez is UNICEF’s youngest ambassador and traveled in September 2009 to Ghana to see first-hand how many of the country’s children lack the necessities we all take for granted — clean water, nutritious food, education and healthcare. Best known for her role as Alex Russo on Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place, Gomez is currently promoting her debut album, Kiss & Tell. She has 3.3 million Facebook fans (second only to Lady Gaga in the top 40 pop world) and more than 1.4 million Twitter followers. That’s a lot of fans to teach about giving back.

Revolutionary Fashion Line For Women In Wheelchairs

Revolutionary Fashion 1

BY KIM HUGHES

In 2010, unless your name is Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg, it’s unlikely anyone is going to declare you a pioneer. Though she’s not quite as famous, Toronto-based fashion designer Izzy Camilleri is a comparable trailblazer and her innovations are impacting lives, albeit among a smaller constituency.

Camilleri designs and creates a line of clothing for women who use wheelchairs called the IZ Collection of Adaptable Clothing. That may not sound revolutionary until you stop to consider how specialized, varied and numerous the needs of people living in wheelchairs can be and how woefully underserved they are by the mainstream fashion industry.

“Since her line has come out, I even look at T-shirts differently,” her client Barbara Turnbull told Samaritanmag. “Hers feel good on.  She chooses the fabrics very carefully, using ones that are not only comfortable to wear, but are kinder to the skin than a lot of what’s available commercially.”

Pigs in Peril Find Forever Homes at Snooters Sanctuary

Yorkshire Pigs 5

By Cori Ferguson

Whether abandoned by overwhelmed pet owners, saved from slaughterhouses or discarded due to disability, an unusual collection of animals have lucked out in finding forever homes at the Snooters Farm Animal Sanctuary, located northeast of Newmarket, Ontario.

Pigs, both pot-bellied and full-sized, make up the bulk of the more than 25 inhabitants at Snooters, although the Morris’ also count two horses, four laying hens, four dogs, two cats, pea fowl and a parrot among their growing menagerie. Many of their pigs have been rescued “without permission,” says the sanctuary’s co-owner Susan Morris, who will only reveal that “they came from a variety of places – factory farms, backyard breeders, auctions.”

Susan and her husband, Brian Morris, both Toronto paramedics for 27 years, launched Snooters in 2001 when they relocated from the suburbs to the hobby farm that now houses the sanctuary.  The proud owners of Valentine, a pot-bellied pig that was a gift for Susan’s 40th birthday, were disturbed by information uncovered while researching how to best care for her so they took it upon themselves to provide a safe, secure home for other pigs facing certain death to instead live out their natural life spans.
